An urban paddle winding through the community of Welland, the old canal is a destination for kayakers and paddle boarders. THe Welland Recreational Canal was established when the Welland By-Pass was constructed in the 1970's to re-route ship traffic away from the city.
Our Recommended Trip
Put In / Take Out: Welland International Flatwater Centre, 16 Townline Tunnel Rd, Welland, ON L3C 2T4
We launched at the Flatwater Centre - there was lots of parking available, although we discovered that we had to carry the kayaks through the stands and down the stairs to the dock. Alternatively, there is some parking across the canal along Canal Bank Street. We opted to take out on this side and move the car around, as it meant we didn't have to carry the boats back up through the stadium seating.

Trip Length: The entire canal is 12 km long, making for a 24 km return trip. We paddled for about 90 minutes, stopped for lunch and then returned, but we didn't cover the entire canal.
